Ankara: A free trade agreement between Trkiye and the UK is expected to enter force in the second half of 2026, the chair of the British Chamber of Commerce in Trkiye told Anadolu. Chris Gaunt highlighted the strong potential in Trkiye and the attractiveness of the UK for exporters, particularly tech startups. He noted that the agreement process has entered its third stage and is expected to expand into new sectors, including fintech and construction technologies.

According to Anadolu Agency, Turkish tech companies are increasingly setting up businesses in the UK to leverage its strong funding and capability, particularly in AI, which is a major focus area. The UK is the seventh-largest investor in Trkiye, underscoring the positive relationship between the two nations.

Trade between Trkiye and the UK amounts to £28 billion ($37 billion), according to the UK government, making Trkiye the UK's 17th-largest trading partner. This trade supports more than 57,000 jobs based on the latest data.

Gaunt mentioned that Trkiye holds an advantage in the trade balance, with an estimated 60% of the trade volume comprising Turkish exports and 40% British exports. The agreement is expected to further boost trade and help balance the overall trade volumes.

Gaunt emphasized that Trkiye is a priority market for the UK, and the agreement will bring more confidence to investors once signed, with a positive outlook for the future.
