Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced that Trkiye is advocating for the initiation of the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, as violations continue to escalate. Fidan emphasized the necessity of advancing to the next phase to prevent the violence from extending beyond Gaza and expressed Trkiye's willingness to contribute to international stabilization efforts.
According to Anadolu Agency, Fidan, in an interview with TRT World, highlighted the collaborative efforts of Trkiye and other nations to progress the ceasefire to its second phase. This phase includes the establishment of an international stabilization force, a peace board for Gaza's governance, and mechanisms for daily administration. He revealed that discussions are currently ongoing behind closed doors, focusing on the integration of the peace board and stabilization force.
Fidan warned of the potential wider repercussions if these efforts fail, stressing the risk of violence spreading to the West Bank. He reiterated the precious nature of the current ceasefire, achieved through substantial diplomatic efforts, including discussions between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and former US President Donald Trump.
Despite the ceasefire, Fidan noted continuous violations, with nearly 400 Palestinians killed since its declaration. Trkiye remains committed to monitoring these developments and communicating violations to relevant partners. The foreign minister also pointed out the inadequacy of humanitarian aid, which remains below the levels stipulated in the ceasefire agreement.
Addressing objections from Israel, Fidan reaffirmed Trkiye's readiness to join an international stabilization force for Gaza. He criticized Israel's resistance to international scrutiny, underscoring Trkiye's role as an advocate for humanitarian values.
In a different context, Fidan discussed the threat posed by ISIS in Syria, stating that regional cooperation has made this threat manageable. He emphasized the importance of integrating armed groups into Syria's national defense framework to maintain sovereignty.
Regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Fidan expressed optimism about the prospects for a peace agreement, praising US-led mediation efforts. He cautioned against escalating tensions in the Black Sea, which threaten regional stability and global food supplies.
Lastly, Fidan commented on the upcoming EU presidency of the Greek Cypriots, suggesting it as an opportunity to pursue a two-state solution and enhance regional cooperation.
