San francisco: Google's access to a vastly larger data set compared to its competitors in the artificial intelligence race, notably against ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, is providing the tech giant with a significant competitive advantage.
According to Anadolu Agency, ChatGPT continues to lead in terms of monthly active users, surpassing Google Gemini. However, recent findings by US-based researcher Sensor Tower indicate that Gemini has outpaced ChatGPT in recent months in terms of monthly active user growth and the time users spend on the chatbot. Google, known for its iconic search engine, has diversified over the years by investing in numerous technologies, including platforms like YouTube and the Android operating system. This, in conjunction with its search engine monopoly, has provided Google with unmatched data to train its AI systems. Although this data advantage supports its AI technology development, there is growing concern over Google potentially establishing a tech monopoly.
Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince, in an interview with US-based tech and culture magazine Wired, stated that Google has been the dominant player in internet history, especially over the last 27 years. He highlighted that Google has developed all necessary tools to monetize traffic and is now a key player in AI research. By combining its search engine capabilities with AI, Google presents a formidable challenge to its competitors.
Prince revealed that Cloudflare found Google currently accesses 3.2 times more internet pages than OpenAI, 4.6 times more than Microsoft, and 4.8 times more than Anthropic or Meta. He emphasized that Google's privileged access to data has enabled Gemini to perform better than ChatGPT, asserting that the AI race is more about data access than chips, research, or technology.
Prince expressed concerns that Google is hindering progress on the internet by not playing by the same rules as others, suggesting that until Google divides its crawlers between search and AI, it will be challenging to secure content completely. Cloudflare has initiated a scheme called 'Content Independence Day,' declared on July 1, offering free tools to clients wishing to prevent their data from being used to train AI. This initiative has reportedly blocked more than 400 billion AI bot requests since its inception.
