Bangkok: The African Union (AU) has firmly rejected any initiatives to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, instead reaffirming its commitment to the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia.

According to Anadolu Agency, the AU issued a statement in which the chairman of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, reiterated the organization's stance on respecting the borders inherited at independence. Youssouf firmly rejected any actions aimed at recognizing Somaliland as an independent entity, emphasizing that it remains a part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

The AU expressed concerns that any attempt to undermine Somalia's unity and sovereignty could set a dangerous precedent with significant implications for peace and stability across the African continent. The statement underscored the AU's unwavering commitment to supporting Somalia's efforts to consolidate peace, strengthen state institutions, and promote inclusive governance.

In a contrasting development, Israel announced that it has become the first country to recognize Somaliland as a sovereign state. Since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991, Somaliland has operated as a de facto independent entity, despite lacking official international recognition.

The Somali government maintains its stance of non-recognition towards Somaliland's independence, viewing it as an integral part of its territory. Any direct engagement with Somaliland is considered by Somalia as a violation of its sovereignty and unity.
