Paris: France on Wednesday firmly dismissed any suggestion of a possible US military move against Greenland, calling such rhetoric 'nonsense' and incompatible with NATO principles. Speaking to France Inter radio, Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot emphasized that the idea of one NATO country attacking another was inconceivable and ran counter to the alliance's core interests.
According to Anadolu Agency - English, Barrot stated, 'As for a possible intervention by force, even if I do not engage in political or diplomatic fiction, this is not political fiction; it is nonsense from the White House.' He further remarked that it would be absolutely contrary to interests for a NATO country to attack another, as such actions would not align with the alliance's principles.
The comments from France come in response to repeated statements from US President Donald Trump and members of his administration suggesting that Washington was considering 'all options' regarding Greenland, including the use of force. These comments have caused unease across Europe. Barrot reiterated France's position that Greenland's status is not open to negotiation, emphasizing that any decisions concerning its future rest solely with Greenland and Denmark.
Barrot also discussed a significant step toward collective security guarantees for Ukraine, following a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in Paris. The meeting brought together around 30 countries from Europe, North America, and Asia to pool military capabilities to ensure peace in Ukraine. Barrot described the meeting as unprecedented and highlighted the commitment of US support, which will include concrete military contributions to aid the Coalition of the Willing in support of Ukraine's armed forces.
Regarding Venezuela, Barrot addressed criticisms of France's reaction to the recent developments, emphasizing France's strong stance against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. He condemned Maduro as a ruthless dictator and criticized the methods used by his government, stressing that they violated international law. Barrot reiterated France's clear position on the crisis and the serious consequences violations of international law could have on world security.
