Ankara: The operation against the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Aleppo is being conducted entirely by the Syrian Army, with Trkiye closely monitoring developments, as announced by the Turkish National Defense Ministry.
According to Anadolu Agency - English, a spokesperson from the ministry stated during a news briefing in Ankara that Trkiye supports Syria's efforts against terrorist organizations, emphasizing the importance of Syria's security to Trkiye. The ministry reiterated its commitment to assisting Syria if requested, highlighting the unity and territorial integrity of the country as central to their support.
The PKK/YPG terrorist group, operating as the SDF, has been shelling residential neighborhoods in Aleppo for the third consecutive day. The attacks have resulted in at least six deaths and 39 injuries, as reported by Syrian media. The violence has displaced over 3,000 civilians and forced the extension of class suspensions in Aleppo's schools and universities.
On March 10, 2025, Syria announced an agreement for the integration of the SDF into state institutions, reaffirming the nation's territorial unity. However, Syrian authorities claim the SDF has yet to comply with the agreement's terms. The Syrian government has been working to enhance security throughout the country since the ouster of Bashar al-Assad's regime on December 8, 2024.
Regarding Ukraine and Black Sea security, the Turkish ministry expressed readiness to support initiatives for a lasting ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine war and participate in a "coalition of the willing." The deployment of Turkish troops under a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine would require an established ceasefire and clear mission mandates. Trkiye is also focused on maintaining Black Sea stability and navigation safety, adhering to the Montreux Convention.
In response to Israel's recognition of Somaliland's independence, the Turkish spokesperson criticized the move as a violation of international law, undermining Somalia's sovereignty. Trkiye remains committed to supporting Somalia's territorial integrity and continues to assist the Somali army in combating the Khawarij terrorist organization, Al-Shabaab, through military and capacity-building support.
