Paris: France has initiated the deployment of military personnel to Greenland, with plans to bolster its presence through additional land, air, and naval assets in the coming days, as announced by President Emmanuel Macron.
According to Anadolu Agency, President Macron revealed during his New Year's address to the armed forces that the deployment is part of a military exercise led by Denmark, which holds sovereignty over Greenland. This move is seen as a demonstration of European solidarity and a commitment to maintaining territorial integrity. Macron emphasized the unique responsibility Europeans have toward Greenland, acknowledging its status as part of the EU and a NATO ally.
Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has been the focus of U.S. interest due to its strategic location and rich mineral resources, alongside concerns regarding increasing Russian and Chinese influence. Both Denmark and Greenland have rejected U.S. proposals to purchase the territory, reaffirming Danish sovereignty.
In response to the geopolitical climate, Denmark, Sweden, and Germany are enhancing their military presence in Greenland through various exercises and reconnaissance missions. Despite a recent meeting between Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and U.S. officials, the American stance on Greenland remains unchanged.
President Macron also highlighted a broader acceleration of France's military expansion, addressing the increasingly unstable and competitive security environment in Europe. He announced plans to strengthen France's military capabilities, reduce dependency on external forces, and ensure the independence of European armies to meet emerging challenges.
Macron declared an ambitious defense spending target, aiming for an annual military budget of £64 billion ($70 billion) by 2027, three years earlier than planned. He noted that these efforts are driven by a commitment to operational credibility and readiness for potential major engagements within the next few years.
Additionally, France is collaborating with Germany to develop early-warning and space-based defense systems, with the intention of extending this partnership across Europe. Macron underscored the importance of consolidating the space dimension of France's military strategy as part of this initiative.
