Islamabad: Pakistan and Thailand have officially requested further details and clarification from Washington following the announcement by the US to pause immigration visa processing for citizens from 75 nations, including these two countries. Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesman Tahir Hussain Andrabi addressed a news conference, expressing that Islamabad is actively engaging with US authorities to gather more information on the matter.

According to Anadolu Agency, the US State Department revealed on Wednesday that it will temporarily halt immigrant visa processing for nationals of 75 countries. The department stated that this suspension would remain until a review ensures that new immigrants will not financially burden American citizens. Andrabi noted that the US announcement was made on a social media platform and described it as an evolving situation that Pakistan is monitoring closely. He expressed hope for a swift resumption of routine visa processing.

The Guardian reported through a State Department cable that Pakistan and Thailand are among the affected countries. In response, Thailand's Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow sought clarification from the US regarding the immigration visa restrictions affecting Thai citizens. As reported by the Thai News Agency, Sihasak engaged in discussions with the US charge d'affaires in Bangkok to address the issue. The US representative clarified that the policy pertains only to immigrant visas for individuals aiming for long-term residency, permanent employment, or citizenship, and does not impact non-immigrant visas for tourists, business visitors, or students.

Sihasak conveyed his concerns, criticizing the broad application of the policy as unfair and not reflective of Thailand's situation. He cautioned that such measures might negatively affect bilateral relations. The Thai Foreign Ministry plans to closely monitor developments while awaiting further details from Washington.
