Washington: US President Donald Trump on Thursday celebrated what he described as 'good news' regarding Iran's decision not to execute protesters, expressing hope that this approach will continue. "FoxNews: 'Iranian protester will no longer be sentenced to death after President Trump's warnings. Likewise others.' This is good news. Hopefully, it will continue!" Trump stated on his social media platform Truth Social.

According to Anadolu Agency, Iran's judiciary denied claims that a man was sentenced to death for participating in the recent anti-government protests. On Tuesday, Trump had told CBS News that the United States would take 'very strong action' if Iranian authorities proceeded with the execution of protesters.

Reports had surfaced alleging that Erfan Soltani, 26, was arrested and swiftly sentenced to death for his involvement in demonstrations sparked by deteriorating economic conditions. However, the judiciary's media center refuted these reports as 'fabricated,' clarifying that Soltani was detained on January 10 and is facing charges of 'gathering and conspiring against national security and propaganda activities.'

The media center further explained that Soltani is currently imprisoned in Karaj, near Tehran. It emphasized that if prosecutors confirm the charges and the court issues a ruling, Soltani would receive a prison sentence under Iranian law, as the death penalty does not apply to the charges he faces.

The protests, ignited by worsening economic conditions, began in Tehran late last month and have since spread to various other cities. Amid the unrest, Iranian officials have accused the US and Israel of backing what they term as 'riots' and 'terrorism.'
