Washington: Honduras' US-backed president-elect Nasry Asfura declared his intention to assume office later this month despite an order for a recount of the November 30 presidential election by the outgoing government. Asfura emphasized that the election results reflect the will of the people and must be honored, stating that his administration's plans would proceed as scheduled. "We are going to take office and govern Honduras in the best way possible," Asfura affirmed.

According to Anadolu Agency, Asfura, a former mayor of Tegucigalpa, was announced the winner by a narrow margin after a lengthy vote count. His main opponent, Salvador Nasralla, has contested the results, citing allegations of fraud. The outgoing President, Xiomara Castro, mandated a recount, contending that some vote reports were not thoroughly reviewed. Castro is constitutionally prohibited from seeking re-election.

Asfura expressed his expectation that the international community, particularly the United States, will support a smooth transition of power. The US State Department has cautioned that any unlawful attempts to overturn the election results would lead to serious repercussions. US President Donald Trump had publicly endorsed Asfura before the election. During his visit to Washington, Asfura met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

Asfura stated his administration will focus on reducing public expenditure, downsizing the government, and investing in infrastructure to draw foreign investment. He also indicated a desire to enhance relations with the US and Israel and mentioned that his administration is reconsidering Honduras' diplomatic ties with China, including the possibility of restoring relations with Taiwan.

Honduras has a history of contested elections and political turmoil, including the 2009 ousting of former President Manuel Zelaya and the protests following the disputed 2017 election. Asfura emphasized that his government would operate independently, focusing on political stability and economic growth.
