Beijing: China has taken a firm stance in support of the United Nations’ central role in global affairs, countering the notion proposed by US President Donald Trump that a newly formed ‘board of peace’ might replace the world body. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Guo Jiakun, underscored the importance of the UN-centered international system during a press briefing in Beijing.

According to Anadolu Agency, Guo responded to Trump’s comments suggesting that while the UN should persist, his ‘board of peace’ could potentially take over its role. The board was announced by the White House as a strategic initiative to end Israel’s conflict with Gaza and support the region’s transition to peace and development. Trump’s remarks indicated a belief in the UN’s untapped potential but hinted at the board’s possible future dominance.

The board of peace is tasked with implementing Trump’s Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict and is supported by multiple committees to oversee the transition in Gaza. Trump has extended invitations to various foreign leaders, including those from Russia and China, to join this initiative.

Beijing, however, has reiterated its commitment to an independent foreign policy focused on peace. Guo emphasized China’s dedication to mutual respect and equality in international relations, stating that China aims to be a positive and stabilizing global force without competing for influence. He highlighted Asia’s status as a hub of growth and prosperity, advocating for the upholding of the UN Charter and the sovereignty of nations.

Guo also addressed questions about Asian security and China’s potential role in promoting a regional security model, stressing the importance of cherishing the region’s stability. He refrained from commenting on issues related to US tariffs and China-Europe relations, reiterating China’s stance on mutual respect and cooperation with European nations.
