Davos: Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi emphasized the inseparable nature of security between the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions following his meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos, Switzerland. Koizumi highlighted the strategic importance of cooperation between Japan and NATO, and the Indo-Pacific Four-comprising Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea.

According to Anadolu Agency, Koizumi underscored the growing strategic significance of these collaborations in a post on the US social media platform X. He committed to bolstering cooperation between Japan and NATO, marking this as a priority in his role as defense chief. The meeting marked Koizumi’s first face-to-face interaction with Rutte since assuming office in 2025.

In a significant move, Japan established its Mission to NATO in Brussels last year, operating independently from its Embassy in Belgium. This development is seen as a step towards strengthening Japan’s engagement with NATO and enhancing security ties.

Additionally, Koizumi reported meetings with Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans and Montenegro’s Prime Minister Milojko Spajic, further emphasizing Japan’s expanding diplomatic and defense engagements in Europe.
