Davos: US President Donald Trump claimed that Europe would be speaking German and Japanese today if it were not for the US-led Allied victory in World War II. Trump made this statement on Wednesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, using it to support his controversial proposal to acquire Greenland.

According to Anadolu Agency, Trump argued that the US’s role in World War II was crucial, stating, “After the war – which we won, we won it big – without us, right now, you’d all be speaking German and little Japanese perhaps.” He used this historical perspective to bolster his case for Greenland, highlighting Denmark’s swift defeat during the war. Trump noted that Copenhagen succumbed to Germany “after just six hours of fighting and was totally unable to defend either itself or Greenland.”

Trump further elaborated that the US felt “compelled” to deploy forces to Greenland, incurring significant costs to establish bases that protected the territory for Denmark. “We literally set up bases on Greenland for Denmark. We fought for Denmark,” he stated, emphasizing the US’s efforts to prevent adversaries from gaining influence in the Western Hemisphere.

Greenland has piqued Trump’s interest due to its strategic position in the Arctic, abundant mineral resources, and concerns over increasing Russian and Chinese activities in the region. Despite his assertions, Denmark and Greenland have dismissed any proposals to cede the territory, reiterating Danish sovereignty over Greenland.
