Ankara: Trkiye could play a mediating role between the US and Europe amid rising tensions over Greenland, according to a US foreign policy expert. Philip Gordon, an expert at the Strobe Talbott Center for Security, Strategy, and Technology under the Foreign Policy program at the Brookings Institution, told Anadolu that Trkiye's position gives it an important voice as transatlantic relations come under strain.

According to Anadolu Agency, Gordon highlighted Trkiye's role in bridging Ukraine and Russia while maintaining relations with Washington. He noted that US President Donald Trump has often spoken positively about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Gordon remarked on Trump's speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, describing it as aggressive towards Europe but open to negotiations. He noted Trump's statement against using force to acquire Greenland would be welcomed by European leaders, who were preparing a response to potential US tariffs and sanctions.

During his WEF speech, Trump stated he would not use military force to acquire Greenland, emphasizing negotiation with Denmark. He argued that Europe's economic growth relies heavily on public spending, migration, and imports. Following Trump's tariff announcement on European countries, the European Parliament halted a trade agreement approval process with the US.

Trump later announced on Truth Social that a framework for a deal involving Greenland and the Arctic region had been established following discussions with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Based on this understanding, he decided not to impose scheduled tariffs on February 1st. Previously, Trump had announced a 10% tariff on goods from several European nations, set to increase in June unless a Greenland purchase agreement was reached. The tariffs would remain until the agreement's conclusion.
