Ukraine’s Chief Negotiator Engages with US Envoys in Davos Prior to Key Moscow Meeting

Davos: Ukraine's chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, held discussions with US President Donald Trump's envoys in Davos, Switzerland. The meeting comes as the US envoys are set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Thursday to continue discussions on a resolution for the ongoing Moscow-Kyiv conflict, now nearing its fourth year. According to Anadolu Agency, Umerov, who was appointed Ukraine's chief negotiator in November last year, shared on Telegram that he met with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner. The discussions focused on economic development, post-war recovery, and security guarantees. Umerov briefed Ukraine's partners on the latest Russian attacks, particularly the situation in Kyiv. Umerov was accompanied by Davyd Arakhamia, the parliamentary leader of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Servant of the People party, and former Strategic Industries Minister Oleksandr Kamyshin. Together, they also interacted with representatives from multinational investment firm BlackRock and met with the prime ministers of Norway and Qatar. The talks in Davos are a precursor to the scheduled meeting between Witkoff, Kushner, and Putin in Moscow, aimed at negotiating a settlement to the Ukraine conflict. In an interview with CNBC at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Witkoff mentioned significant progress over the past six to eight weeks concerning a settlement in Ukraine. He noted that further meetings with Ukrainian officials were planned for Wednesday evening, before proceeding to high-level discussions in Moscow. Witkoff remarked that the Kremlin had requested the Moscow talks, expressing optimism for positive developments. Both Witkoff and Kushner have engaged in several meetings with Putin and Ukrainian delegations, focusing on resolving the conflict as it approaches its fifth year. Additionally, Russian Envoy Kirill Dmitriev informed journalists about having "constructive" discussions with Witkoff and Kushner after their meeting on the sidelines of the WEF.
