Damascus: The state-owned Syrian Petroleum Company has announced the resumption of oil extraction from fields recently retaken by the Syrian Army from the YPG/SDF. This development marks a significant step in Syria’s efforts to bolster its energy sector and national economy.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that technical teams have started operations to extract oil and pump raw gas from the Jibsa fields in Hasakah. Safwan Sheikh Ahmad, the company’s director of institutional communications, stated that the oil is being transported to the Homs and Baniyas refineries as part of an integrated plan to bring the fields back into service.
Ahmad highlighted that the current efforts focus on restoring the fields, with projected oil production expected to reach approximately 100,000 barrels per day within four months. This increase in production is anticipated to support the energy sector and contribute to the national economy.
SANA further reported that raw gas is being pumped from the Jibsa fields to the Furqlus gas plant at a pressure of 35 bar, supplying gas for electricity generation. The transportation rate is approximately 1.2 million cubic meters per day via the Kona and Markada stations.
This initiative follows the Syrian Army’s recovery of oil fields in Raqqa and Deir Ezzor, which were subsequently handed over to the Syrian Petroleum Company for rehabilitation. The resumption of production comes after a Jan. 18 agreement between Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and the SDF. The agreement established a ceasefire and outlined the integration of SDF members into state institutions.
Under the terms of the agreement, civilian institutions are to be merged into state bodies, and SDF members are to be incorporated individually into the Defense Ministry. Additionally, border crossings and oil and gas fields are to return to government control, with the immediate administrative and military handover of Deir Ezzor and Raqqa to the government.
The agreement followed a military operation in eastern and northeastern Syria, during which government forces regained considerable areas after repeated SDF violations of earlier agreements.
