Baghdad: Iraq's Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani on Sunday referred to the transfer of ISIS (Daesh) detainees from Syria to Iraqi prisons as 'temporary,' while urging nations to repatriate their citizens who are members of the terrorist group.

According to Anadolu Agency, Sudani emphasized that the temporary relocation of ISIS detainees to Iraqi prisons aims to safeguard both national and regional security. During a meeting with Atul Khare, the UN under-secretary-general for operational support, Sudani highlighted Iraq's commitment to finding effective solutions to prevent terrorist activities. He called on relevant countries to take responsibility by repatriating their nationals who are ISIS members and bringing them to justice.

Khare, representing UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, expressed appreciation for Iraq's efforts in promoting regional stability and its cooperation in transferring ISIS detainees, especially those of Iraqi nationality. He underlined the significance of this initiative and the necessity for international backing to curb the spread of terrorism.

On Tuesday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the commencement of a mission to relocate ISIS detainees from northeastern Syria to Iraq. The mission, initiated by US forces, involved the transfer of 150 ISIS members from a detention facility in Hasakah province to a secure location in Iraq. This operation is part of a larger plan to eventually move up to 7,000 detainees to facilities under Iraqi control.
