Ankara: Turkish Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus emphasized that Syria's future should be determined by its people through an inclusive democratic process. He stressed the necessity for all terrorist organizations, including the YPG and ISIS (Daesh), to exit the country to achieve lasting peace.
According to Anadolu Agency, Kurtulmus made these remarks during a joint press conference after inter-delegation talks with his Spanish counterpart Francina Armengol Socias, who was on an official visit to Ankara. He highlighted the importance of the constitution-drafting process for Syria's future and insisted that all armed and illegitimate groups must vacate Syrian territory. Kurtulmus stated that it is essential for all Syrians-Arabs, Kurds, Turkmens, Sunnis, Yazidis, Alawites, and non-Muslims-to coexist peacefully under a unified flag.
When questioned about the National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy Committee formed to achieve a 'terror-free Trkiye,' Kurtulmus disclosed that the committee has conducted 20 meetings since August 5, 2025, and is now in the reporting phase. A final report, containing concrete legislative proposals, will be submitted to parliament.
In addition, Kurtulmus addressed the situation in Gaza, stating that while Trkiye welcomes the beginning of a new phase with hope, it does so with caution and prudence. He criticized Israel for breaching the ceasefire in Gaza and continuing acts of genocide. Kurtulmus called for strong international pressure to end these actions and stressed the urgency of opening the Rafah border crossing to facilitate humanitarian aid. He noted that global developments should not overshadow the plight of the people of Gaza.
Kurtulmus praised Spain for recognizing the state of Palestine and supporting a two-state solution. He also emphasized the robust bilateral ties between Trkiye and Spain, pointing to cooperation in various sectors such as trade, defense, energy, tourism, education, and culture. The enhancement of connections through Turkish Airlines flights and the shared historical legacy of Andalusia were highlighted as factors that bring the two nations closer.
Spanish Parliament Speaker Armengol Socias expressed that Spain and Trkiye, as NATO members, are committed to regional stability and will continue to collaborate. She expressed optimism about Trkiye joining the EU and underscored the visit as a reflection of their mutual willingness to cooperate.
Armengol highlighted shared international strategies and values, including peace, international law, respect for sovereignty, and human rights. Both countries support peace in Palestine and hope for an end to ongoing atrocities, reaffirming support for the establishment of a Palestinian state. She noted the strong relationship between Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in this context.
