Abu dhabi: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that an energy ceasefire was a topic of discussion during trilateral peace talks held in the United Arab Emirates last week. This revelation comes after a statement by U.S. President Donald Trump, who claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to a temporary halt on strikes for a week.
According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy responded to Trump's remarks on the social media platform X, acknowledging that Trump had personally requested Putin not to target Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, especially during harsh winter conditions. Zelenskyy emphasized the critical nature of maintaining power supply, describing it as the foundation of life, and expressed gratitude towards their partners for efforts to safeguard Ukrainian lives.
Zelenskyy stated that the discussions in the United Arab Emirates involved his team and expressed hope for the implementation of the agreements reached. He highlighted that steps towards de-escalation would be significant in making real progress towards ending the ongoing war.
In a video address later, Zelenskyy mentioned that the situation over the next few days would be indicative of the effectiveness of the discussed measures. The two-day consultations involving Russia, Ukraine, and the U.S. took place in Abu Dhabi on January 23-24, with a new round of talks preliminarily scheduled for the upcoming Sunday, again in Abu Dhabi.
As of now, Russian authorities have not provided any comments regarding the proposed energy ceasefire.
