Europe’s Survival Hinges on Strengthened Strategic Autonomy: Former Greek Foreign Minister

Istanbul: Former Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos has issued a stark warning that Europe will not survive unless it enhances its strategic autonomy. During a panel discussion titled "Beyond Tension: Rebuilding the Strategic Balance in the Eastern Mediterranean," held in Istanbul, Avramopoulos emphasized the necessity for Europe to make critical decisions regarding its strategic direction. According to Anadolu Agency, Avramopoulos highlighted that the European bloc is "on the brink of decay" and must proceed swiftly towards completing the European project through common defense and foreign policy initiatives. He stressed the importance of strategic maturity and cooperation among Eastern Mediterranean countries, urging them to take control of their destiny amidst competing global and regional interests. Avramopoulos also addressed the complex relations between the EU, Trkiye, and Greece, pointing out that unresolved disputes and contested maritime zones pose significant risks and opportunities for the region. He advocated for institutionalized mechanisms and direct communication channels to prevent escalation and build trust, warning against war rhetoric that could undermine dialogue. In his remarks, Avramopoulos also commented on the situation in Gaza, describing it as a "stress test" for the entire neighborhood. He called for a dual commitment to security for Israel and a credible political and humanitarian horizon for Palestinians to break the cycle of conflict.
