Paris: French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot stated on Monday that "Europe can resist the brutalization of the world" and position itself as a third way amid rising tensions that could lead to a potential US-China confrontation.
According to Anadolu Agency, Barrot emphasized the geopolitical challenge of the century as the increasing tension that might result in a confrontation between the United States and China. He highlighted Europe's potential to change the global equation by not seeking confrontation with either side, but instead resisting global brutalization and charting a distinct path as a third way. Barrot expressed this vision in an interview with French daily Liberation.
Barrot urged the European bloc to reject intimidation and coercion from any source and called for accelerating strategic autonomy to avoid exposure to the predatory ambitions of emerging empires. He cited former US President Donald Trump's Greenland takeover bids as an example of threats that exposed Europe's security dependencies.
Highlighting the European Commission's role, Barrot insisted that it must clearly declare its readiness to use all available instruments, including the most powerful ones, to protect Europe's vital interests, such as territorial integrity, electoral process integrity, and decision-making autonomy. He noted that Washington reconsidered its position on Greenland due to Europe's clear messages and unity, demonstrating that European countries are stronger than some had previously believed.
Barrot articulated that Europe must now assume its role as a major power capable of deterring threats to its interests.
In his remarks on the Middle East, Barrot discussed recent developments in Syria, Gaza, and Iran. He mentioned the ceasefire and phased integration agreement between the Syrian government and the terrorist organization YPG/SDF, which provides security and political guarantees to the Kurds and recognizes their identity within a unified Syrian nation. Barrot stressed its importance in containing any resurgence of ISIS and announced plans to travel to the region at the end of next week.
Regarding Gaza, Barrot explained the decision not to sign Trump's Board of Peace charter, stating it competes with the UN's plan. He expressed support for the peace plan and its positive results, acknowledging the difficult situation in Gaza but emphasizing the importance of the current ceasefire.
Addressing tensions between Iran and the US, Barrot noted the ongoing US military buildup in the region. He urged Iran to seize the opportunity for negotiations proposed by the US, agree to significant concessions, and adopt a radical change in posture.
