US Energy and War Departments Collaborate on Advanced Nuclear Reactor Initiative

Washington: The US Department of War and the Department of Energy have announced a collaboration on nuclear power, focusing on the transport and testing of a next-generation reactor. "At March Air Reserve Base, California, today, a next-generation nuclear reactor was loaded aboard a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft for transport to Hill Air Force Base, Utah," stated the US Department of War's official web account on Sunday.

According to Anadolu Agency, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright indicated that the transfer of small reactors marks the beginning of an "American nuclear renaissance," which is being propelled by private investment and innovation. He highlighted that executive orders signed by US President Donald Trump have played a crucial role in removing obstacles that previously hindered the US nuclear industry.

The statement further detailed that the reactor will be later moved to the Utah San Rafael Energy Lab for testing and evaluation. Known as Ward 250, this reactor is a 5-megawatt unit small enough to be transported by a C-17 aircraft and capable of powering approximately 5,000 homes.

The initiative is expected to enhance energy security at military bases by decreasing dependence on civilian grids and fuel supply lines. The project aligns with President Trump's executive orders aimed at modernizing the US nuclear energy sector.

Undersecretary of War for Acquisition and Sustainment Michael P. Duffey emphasized the critical importance of the partnership, noting that the future of warfare is becoming increasingly energy-intensive. He pointed to the growing energy demands from AI data centers, directed energy weapons, and space and cyber infrastructure.
