Algiers: Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced the launch of a trans-Saharan gas pipeline across Niger, signaling a thaw in relations between the two neighboring countries. "We agreed to launch the project to complete the trans-Saharan gas pipeline through Nigerien territory after the holy month of Ramadan," Tebboune stated during a joint press conference in Algiers with Nigerien President Abdourahamane Tchiani.

According to Anadolu Agency, Algerian state energy company Sonatrach will spearhead the project, beginning the pipeline's construction through Niger. Tchiani's visit to Algiers, which began on Sunday, is seen as a positive step toward mending the diplomatic tension that has persisted for over ten months between the two nations. Tebboune emphasized the enduring communication between the peoples of Algeria and Niger despite the diplomatic chill.

The two leaders agreed to deepen cooperation in several areas, including security, energy, education, and military training. President Tebboune expressed a commitment to maintaining the longstanding friendship between Algeria and Niger. Recent diplomatic moves include Algeria's announcement of the immediate return of its ambassador to Niger, Ahmed Saadi, and the resumption of duties by Niger's ambassador to Algeria, Aminou Malam Manzo.

The diplomatic strain began last April when Niger, along with Burkina Faso and Mali, recalled their ambassadors from Algeria following an incident involving a Malian drone. Algeria's response included recalling its ambassadors from the three countries, attributing Niger's actions to its alliance within the Sahel States rather than a bilateral conflict. Relations began improving late last year, with exchanges of messages and visits by high-ranking officials.

Algeria and Niger, which share a border of approximately 950 kilometers (590 miles), continue to collaborate on significant regional projects, including the Trans-Saharan Highway.
