Damascus: Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa said challenges were 'significant' after revolutionary forces entered Damascus on Dec. 08, 2024, stressing that the immediate priority was to control weapons, unify armed factions, and safeguard the country's territorial integrity.

According to Anadolu Agency, Sharaa made these remarks during an open dialogue session at the Conference on the Unity of Islamic Discourse in Damascus, a video of which was posted by Syrian al-Ikhbariya TV on YouTube late Monday. He emphasized the need to control the revolutionary street and unite the factions under a common goal, focusing on building a unified national army without factional divisions.

The president highlighted obstacles stemming from internal disputes and ideological differences that have developed over the past 14 years. He underscored efforts to reintegrate Syrian society and reconnect the country with regional and international communities, which he described as essential.

Sharaa also addressed the threat of partition and the importance of preserving Syria's unity, as well as enabling the state to reclaim its resources and creating conditions for the return of refugees, especially in northeastern Syria. He pointed out the destruction of the service, economy, and energy sectors, which has led to rising prices and a weakened currency.

He noted that building the state requires the collective efforts of all institutions, not just the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Interior, or religious leaders. Revolutionary forces entered Damascus in late 2024, leading to the flight of President Bashar al-Assad to Russia and the end of the Baath Party's regime. A new transitional administration led by President Sharaa was established in January 2025.
