Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin as the new ambassador to Trkiye.

According to Anadolu Agency, this appointment was announced through presidential decrees on the Russian government portal, marking Vershinin’s transition from his previous role as deputy foreign minister. The move follows the reassignment of Alexey Yerkhov, the former ambassador to Trkiye, who was appointed ambassador to Tashkent on September 5. Since Yerkhov’s departure, the Russian diplomatic mission in Ankara has been led by acting Charge d’Affaires Alexey Ivanov.

In another decree, Putin has appointed Georgy Borisenko, Russia’s ambassador to Egypt, as deputy foreign minister. Sergey Vershinin, born in 1954, is an alumnus of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, graduating in 1976, and the Foreign Ministry’s diplomatic academy in 1991. His career includes various diplomatic roles in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, with a notable tenure as ambassador to Algeria from 1999 to 2003. Since 2004, Vershinin has held various positions within the Foreign Ministry, including serving as deputy foreign minister from 2018 until his recent appointment.
