Seoul: South Korean Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Kang Dong-gil has been suspended for one month due to his alleged involvement in former President Yoon Suk Yeol's unsuccessful attempt to implement martial law in late 2024.

According to Anadolu Agency, the suspension follows a committee meeting convened by the Defense Ministry to decide on disciplinary actions against Kang. The meeting occurred after revelations surfaced regarding Kang's participation in forming the martial law command on the night of December 3, 2024.

Kang had already been relieved from his duties last month amidst these allegations. During the time martial law was declared, he was serving as the chief of the directorate of military support at the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Authorities had previously announced that a comprehensive six-month investigation scrutinized around 860 generals and field-grade officers from 24 military commands and units. This investigation identified approximately 180 personnel suspected of having direct or indirect involvement in the martial law effort.

The Defense Ministry further reported that about 1,580 troops were mobilized during the brief period when the martial law decree was in effect.
