Nicosia: Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz has issued a warning concerning the Greek Cypriot Administration's decision to allow third countries to utilize military bases on the island, asserting that this move endangers the security of everyone in Cyprus amidst escalating regional tensions. The announcement was made during a joint press conference with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Unal Ustel at Ercan International Airport.

According to Anadolu Agency, Yilmaz highlighted the potential risks posed to all countries in the region by the island's use for operations targeting the Middle East. He criticized the Greek Cypriot administration for acting unilaterally as if it controls the entire island, making decisions that overstep its authority and disregard the sovereign equality of the Turkish Cypriot people. Yilmaz emphasized the increased security risks arising from the Greek Cypriot administration's recent military activities and base policies, noting their historical alignment with Israel during the genocide in Gaza.

Yilmaz underscored Trkiye's role as a guarantor, stating that its military presence on the island for over half a century has been crucial in maintaining security and stability, benefitting both Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots. He expressed concern that the Greek Cypriot actions undermine the island's welfare and peace, damaging its status as a secure region. Yilmaz also stressed that a solution to the Cyprus issue requires recognizing the Turkish Cypriots' rights, sovereign equality, and lifting their international isolation.

Additionally, Yilmaz announced that a new Economic and Financial Cooperation Agreement between Trkiye and the TRNC is set to be finalized this month. He mentioned ongoing efforts to shape this cooperation, estimating it will involve a financial figure close to 25 billion Turkish liras, with plans to sign mutual protocols and implement the new program within the month.
