Baghdad: Iraq declared on Tuesday that the recent targeting of the US Embassy in Baghdad is a 'terrorist assault' on the nation's sovereignty, denouncing the attack as a criminal act. In a statement released on the social media platform X by the media office of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, the Iraqi government emphasized that outlawed groups were responsible for targeting the embassy headquarters in the capital city.

According to Anadolu Agency, Prime Minister Al-Sudani, who also serves as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, has instructed security agencies and relevant authorities to pursue those responsible for the attack and ensure they are brought to justice. The statement further highlighted that targeting diplomatic missions is a serious breach of international agreements and diplomatic relations, potentially placing Iraq in a challenging position within the international community.

Earlier on Tuesday, a fire erupted near the US Embassy compound in Baghdad following an attack by three explosive-laden drones, as reported by an Anadolu reporter at the scene. The embassy's air defense system successfully intercepted and destroyed two of the drones, while a third managed to strike a wall of the compound, igniting a fire in the surrounding area.

The Iraqi government made it clear that it will not tolerate any attempts to destabilize security in Baghdad or other cities across Iraq, nor will it allow any party to exploit weapons outside the state's authority. This attack occurs amid ongoing tensions, as the US and Israel continue a joint offensive against Iran since February 28, resulting in the death of around 1,300 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries with US military assets, leading to casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to global markets and aviation.
