Ramallah: As the US-Israel conflict with Iran intensifies, violence in the occupied West Bank has surged, mostly unnoticed on the global stage.
According to Anadolu Agency, rights groups and analysts report a significant increase in attacks by Israeli forces and settlers against Palestinians. These attacks are compounded by stricter movement restrictions and increasing displacement, as international focus shifts towards the broader regional conflict.
Recent incidents highlight the deteriorating situation, including a reported sexual assault of a Palestinian man by Israeli settlers in the northern Jordan Valley and the killing of a family of four by Israeli forces in Tammun. Analysts attribute this escalation to the US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran that began on February 28, sparking broader regional tensions.
Mohamad Alqeeq, a Ramallah-based Palestinian political analyst, commented on the situation, noting that the Israeli government has exploited regional instability to facilitate settler attacks on Palestinian properties and lives. Max Rodenbeck, Israel-Palestine director at the International Crisis Group, remarked that settler violence had been on the rise since the current Israeli government assumed office in December 2022. He added that the media's focus on the Iran conflict has allowed for accelerated settlement expansion.
Between February 28 and March 14, at least 13 Palestinians were killed in the West Bank by Israeli forces and settlers, as reported by Israeli rights group B'Tselem. Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin warned foreign diplomats about daily attacks by illegal Israeli settlers on Palestinians and their properties, often under the Israeli army's protection.
Israeli forces have also intensified raids and arrests across Palestinian territories, with rights groups documenting pre-dawn operations resulting in numerous detentions. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that 1,062 Palestinians, including 231 children, were killed in the West Bank between October 7, 2023, and March 7 this year.
Beyond direct violence, Palestinians are facing expanded Israeli restrictions, affecting daily life and access to essential services. UN agencies have noted intensified movement restrictions across the West Bank since February 28, impacting work, healthcare, and religious practices. The demolition of Palestinian homes has also increased, with Israel destroying 312 structures in early 2026.
Analysts suggest that these actions are part of Israel's broader strategy to expand control over Palestinian land. Palestinian Foreign Minister Shahin accused Israeli authorities of using regional crises to accelerate settlement expansion and annexation, while Alqeeq noted that Israel has used the US military buildup to further its annexation plans. Rodenbeck highlighted a climate of impunity for settler violence, emphasizing the lack of prosecution and lenient sentencing for settler crimes.
The situation in the West Bank continues to deteriorate, with Palestinians facing deepening repression and displacement, raising concerns about the future for the region's 3.3 million residents.
