Baghdad: Iraq's Defense Ministry announced on Monday that a rocket attack targeted an airbase west of Baghdad International Airport, resulting in the destruction of a military aircraft. The ministry's statement detailed that Mohammed Alaa Air Base was struck at 1:55 a.m. (22:55 GMT) by 122 mm Grad rockets launched from the outskirts of the capital.

According to Anadolu Agency, the attack led to the destruction of an Antonov-132 aircraft belonging to the Iraqi Air Force. Fortunately, no human casualties were reported in the incident. The authorities have initiated an assessment of the damage and are actively working to identify the source of the rocket fire.

The attack comes amid heightened regional tensions following a US and Israeli air offensive on Iran on February 28. This offensive has resulted in over 1,340 fatalities, including the death of then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In response, Iran has carried out drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and other Gulf countries hosting US military assets.
