Talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan are "advancing steadily," China announced on Friday. The ongoing discussions, facilitated by Beijing, are taking place in Urumqi city, following weeks of border clashes between the two nations.
According to Anadolu Agency, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning highlighted that the consultation process is progressing smoothly. "The three sides have had common understandings and agreements on specific matters regarding the process," Mao stated during a news conference in Beijing. China has been actively mediating since the escalation of the Pakistan-Afghanistan conflict, maintaining close communication with both sides and providing platforms for dialogue.
Mao further emphasized that both Islamabad and Kabul appreciate China's mediation efforts and are open to continuing discussions. This willingness is seen as a positive step towards resolving tensions. The recent border clashes began in late Februa ry after Pakistan launched airstrikes in Afghanistan, accusing Kabul of harboring Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants responsible for deadly attacks in Pakistan. Kabul has denied these allegations.
Officials from both countries report that the violence has resulted in the deaths of dozens of civilians, soldiers, and militants on both sides of the border. A week-long ceasefire was agreed upon on March 18, the eve of Eid al-Fitr, following appeals from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.
