Tehran: The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Sunday expressed grave concerns over the safety of Iran's nuclear facilities amidst ongoing US and Israeli military actions. In a statement released on the US social media platform X, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted the potential for catastrophic nuclear accidents if these sites are targeted.

According to Anadolu Agency, Tedros emphasized the urgency of the situation following a recent incident at the Bushehr nuclear power plant. He noted that attacks on such facilities could lead to nuclear accidents with long-lasting health consequences. The situation has been exacerbated by the recent escalation of conflict in the Middle East, with Tedros calling for immediate efforts to reduce tensions in the region.

The urgency of Tedros' warning comes after a series of attacks on Saturday targeted Iran's Bushehr nuclear plant and key petrochemical centers, including the Mahshahr and Bandar Imam special petrochemical zones. The region has been on high alert since a joint US-Israeli offensive began on February 28, resulting in over 1,340 casualties, among them the former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

In response to the offensive, Iran has launched drone and missile attacks against Israel and other regional locations, including Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf nations housing US military installations. The ongoing conflict highlights the precarious balance of power and the potential for significant humanitarian and environmental disasters should nuclear facilities be compromised.
