Moscow: Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has expressed his support for the ongoing peace talks between the United States and Iran during a recent phone conversation with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The Russian Foreign Ministry disclosed that Lavrov conveyed his hope for the successful outcome of these negotiations.

According to Anadolu Agency, Lavrov welcomed the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran, with Israel also committing to the agreements. This initiative, facilitated by Pakistani mediators, is believed to have broader regional implications, particularly affecting Lebanon. Lavrov reiterated Russia’s willingness to assist in resolving the consequences of what Moscow describes as unprovoked US-Israeli aggression against Iran, with the aim of securing long-term peace and stability in the region.

During the call, Araghchi expressed gratitude to Russia for its steadfast position in the UN Security Council discussions on the Gulf situation. He emphasized Iran’s commitment to the ceasefire, highlighting the United States’ responsibility to uphold its commitments, especially in halting hostilities, notably in Lebanon. Araghchi also addressed the security of the Strait of Hormuz, assuring that safe navigation would be maintained under specific guidelines coordinated with Iran’s armed forces, provided the US fulfills its obligations.

In a related development, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned an Israeli attack on Lebanon that occurred on April 8. Zakharova warned that such actions could undermine the negotiation process and heighten the risk of renewed large-scale armed conflict in the Middle East.
