Tehran: General Mohammad Karami, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Ground Forces, has announced that Iran has developed a multi-layered national defense system, focusing on a decentralized and asymmetric strategy in response to ongoing regional tensions.
According to Anadolu Agency, Karami stated that a ‘multi-layered security belt’ has been implemented by Iran’s armed forces. He noted that the current structure and combat readiness of Iranian units have created a challenging and unpredictable environment for adversaries. Karami highlighted that the confusion observed among enemy forces on the battlefield is a testament to the preparedness and coordination within Iran’s military branches.
Karami emphasized Iran’s geographical landscape as a significant deterrent to potential invasions, describing it as a ‘prison and swamp’ for any invading forces. He referenced a specific incident involving a failed US special operations mission in Shahreza, Isfahan province, where American forces were compelled to withdraw despite substantial resources and personnel being deployed.
The commander also underscored the uniqueness of Iran’s defense model, which includes the mobilization of over 17 million volunteers alongside regular military and paramilitary forces. The region has been on heightened alert following an offensive by Israel and the US against Iran on February 28, resulting in the deaths of at least 3,000 individuals, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In retaliation, Tehran launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, leading to casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions in global markets and aviation. In response to these developments, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran, acknowledging Tehran’s presentation of a ‘workable’ 10-point proposal for negotiations. The ceasefire announcement arrived shortly before a deadline set by Trump for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and agree to terms to avoid widespread destruction.
