Haifa: Israeli authorities announced the arrest of a 22-year-old Israeli man, identified as Ami Gaidrov, on suspicion of espionage for Iran and involvement in a plot to assassinate a high-profile figure. According to a joint statement from the Israeli Police and the Shin Bet security agency, Gaidrov was apprehended in March for allegedly maintaining contact with an Iranian handler since August 2025.
According to Anadolu Agency, the statement revealed that Gaidrov had undertaken several assignments at the behest of his Iranian contact, receiving substantial financial compensation in return. Among the tasks, Gaidrov purportedly agreed to manufacture explosives intended for an assassination, although the identity of the intended target remains undisclosed.
Investigations have uncovered evidence of Gaidrov documenting his activities through photos and videos, which were then relayed to his Iranian handler as proof of task completion. Additionally, authorities noted that Gaidrov shared sensitive information with associates, assisting them in procuring raw materials necessary for explosive production. This collaboration led to the detention of several other Israelis for further questioning.
The investigation further revealed that Gaidrov and his associates were involved in obtaining explosive materials, concealing them, and performing tests to evaluate their effectiveness. During the ongoing conflict with Iran, Gaidrov reportedly received directives to supply images of strategic locations such as the Haifa port and missile launch sites in northern Israel. It is estimated that he was compensated with over 70,000 shekels (approximately $22,600) via digital payment platforms for his espionage activities.
Authorities have indicated that indictments against Gaidrov and his accomplices are anticipated in the coming days. In recent years, Israeli officials have reported the arrests of numerous individuals suspected of espionage activities on behalf of Iran, though Tehran has not issued public comments regarding these allegations.
The situation unfolds amidst heightened regional tensions following a joint military offensive by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28, resulting in significant casualties, including the death of Iran’s then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and other countries in the region hosting US military assets.
