Washington: The US House Oversight Committee on Sunday requested a briefing from the US Secret Service following the shooting outside the White House Correspondents' Dinner.
According to Anadolu Agency, Rep. James Comer announced the request on US social media company X, stating that the committee seeks to understand the circumstances surrounding the assassination attempt against President Trump at the event. The committee has yet to schedule a date for the briefing, and the Secret Service has not provided any comments or additional information.
The incident involved suspect Cole Allen, a 31-year-old man from California, who was apprehended on Saturday after he rushed a Secret Service checkpoint and opened fire. A law enforcement officer was injured in the incident but survived thanks to a bulletproof vest. Allen had checked into a nearby hotel the day before as a registered guest and was found to be in possession of a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche indicated that Allen's intention was to target Trump administration officials. The request for a briefing underscores the need for clarity and further details from the Secret Service regarding the shooting and the suspect's motives.
