Stockholm: Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on Wednesday said the US appears to lack a coherent strategy in its war with Iran, adding to a growing chorus of European criticism.
According to Anadolu Agency, Kristersson highlighted the uncertainty surrounding Washington's approach to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He expressed difficulty in discerning a clear strategy from the US administration, reflecting concerns shared by other European leaders.
On Monday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz joined the criticism by highlighting the absence of an 'exit strategy' in the US approach to the Iran conflict. Merz further mentioned that the US had faced challenges during negotiations with Tehran. Similarly, French President Emmanuel Macron called for a more serious and consistent approach, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and advising against daily public statements.
The conflict escalated when the US and Israel launched a joint offensive against Iran on February 28, leading to retaliatory strikes by Tehran on US interests across the region, especially in Gulf countries. A ceasefire was brokered on April 8 with Pakistani mediation, followed by talks in Islamabad on April 11-12, which concluded without a resolution.
US President Donald Trump later announced an extension of the truce at Pakistan's request, pending a new proposal from Tehran. However, he indicated a reluctance to accept Iran's latest proposal, which included reopening the Strait of Hormuz but deferred discussions on Iran's nuclear program.
