Madrid: Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares has described Ukraine's recent ceasefire announcement as a "genuine commitment to peace," emphasizing the importance of halting hostilities to end the ongoing conflict.

According to Anadolu Agency, Albares commented on the developments through a post on US social media platform X. He praised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's decision to declare an unconditional ceasefire, urging Russia to follow suit and cease its attacks. "President Zelenskyy's announcement of an unconditional ceasefire reflects a genuine commitment to peace. We call on Russia to also halt its attacks, taking steps to end this war," Albares stated.

Earlier in the week, the Russian Defense Ministry declared a ceasefire for May 8-9, marking the celebration of the Soviet people's victory in the Great Patriotic War. The ministry's statement on Telegram emphasized Moscow's commitment to taking 'all necessary' measures to ensure security during the celebrations, while also warning of a 'massive' retaliatory missile strike if the events were disrupted.

In response, President Zelenskyy announced a ceasefire with Russia starting at midnight in Kyiv. He stressed the value of human life over any anniversary celebration, highlighting the importance of peace. Zelenskyy also noted that no official request had been made to Ukraine regarding the cessation of hostilities announced by Moscow for its Victory Day celebrations.
