Moscow: Russia on Tuesday called on all parties involved in the escalating tensions between the US and Iran to exercise 'maximum restraint,' according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.

According to Anadolu Agency, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova expressed regret over the stalled negotiation process aimed at resolving the situation in the Persian Gulf. She emphasized Russia's commitment to facilitating peace in the region, advocating for resolving disagreements through political and diplomatic channels rather than military means.

Zakharova warned against the escalation of violence and potential damage to civilian infrastructure due to strikes on Iran and neighboring Arab states. She highlighted the risk of any action leading to a resumption of a large-scale armed conflict, stressing the importance of vigilance against provocations by forces intent on derailing peace efforts.

The tensions in the region have been particularly high following US and Israeli strikes against Iran on February 28, which prompted retaliatory actions by Tehran and disruptions in the crucial Strait of Hormuz. Efforts to mediate a ceasefire saw a temporary truce take effect on April 8, facilitated by Pakistan. However, negotiations in Islamabad failed to yield a long-lasting agreement, though the ceasefire was later extended indefinitely by US President Donald Trump.
