Washington: The United States announced that 58 commercial vessels trying to enter or exit Iranian ports have been redirected under a US naval blockade aimed at controlling Iranian maritime traffic. This action is part of ongoing efforts to enforce the blockade, which has been fully operational, as confirmed by the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
According to Anadolu Agency, CENTCOM revealed through a statement on the US social media platform X that their forces have not only redirected these vessels but have also disabled four since April 13. This move is intended to prevent ships from accessing Iranian ports amidst escalating regional tensions.
The tensions have significantly increased following military strikes by the US and Israel against Iran. These actions prompted Iranian retaliations targeting Israel and American allies in the Gulf, as well as resulted in the closure of the critical Strait of Hormuz. Although a ceasefire was initiated on April 8 through efforts by Pakistani mediators, the subsequent negotiations in Islamabad did not yield a lasting agreement. US President Donald Trump later announced a continuation of the truce, though without specifying an end date.
The US has upheld the naval blockade focusing on Iranian maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz since April 13.
