Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Sunday that Ukraine has exerted some effort to bring Russian President Vladimir Putin to the table for a potential meeting. Zelenskyy emphasized that the format for any talks still needs to be determined.
According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy's comments followed Putin's announcement on Saturday, expressing his readiness to meet Zelenskyy in a neutral third country. Putin, however, stipulated that such a meeting would only be to finalize a peace agreement aimed at ending the ongoing four-year conflict.
Zelenskyy also mentioned preparations for a prisoner exchange involving 1,000 prisoners from each side. "Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters has handed over the lists for one thousand POWs to the Russian side," he stated.
Additionally, Zelenskyy accused Russia of breaching a ceasefire that was declared the previous week. He reported over 150 assault operations, more than 100 shellings, and close to 10,000 kamikaze drone strikes in the past two days. "The Russian army is not observing any silence on the front," he noted on Telegram.
Despite these tensions, Zelenskyy remarked that there had been no significant missile or air strikes recently. He explained that Ukraine has refrained from long-range strikes in response to the "absence of large-scale Russian attacks." Zelenskyy warned that if Russia resumes full-scale warfare, Ukraine's response would be immediate and significant.
Russia had announced a Victory Day ceasefire for May 8-9, with Ukraine responding by declaring a truce starting May 6. Former U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned on his Truth Social media platform that both Russia and Ukraine agreed to a three-day ceasefire and a 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner exchange, expressing appreciation for the decision by both leaders.
