Trkiye’s Foreign Minister Expresses Optimism for US-Iran Ceasefire

Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has expressed optimism about the willingness of the United States and Iran to halt ongoing hostilities and work towards a lasting peace agreement. He cautioned that renewed conflict could destabilize the region and negatively impact the global economy.

According to Anadolu Agency, Fidan underscored Trkiye’s immediate focus on ensuring the continuation of the current ceasefire. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace to avoid further disruption to the global economy and energy security. Fidan noted that both parties seem willing to negotiate, despite recent disagreements being part of the normal diplomatic process.

Highlighting Trkiye’s collaborative efforts with Qatar, Fidan discussed their long-standing mediation cooperation in regional crises. He praised Qatar’s commitment to achieving tangible results rather than seeking credit, and warned of the potential consequences if diplomatic efforts fail, including impacts on energy security, border stability, and refugee movements.

Fidan addressed concerns about energy security and maritime navigation, specifically noting Trkiye’s minimal reliance on the Strait of Hormuz due to alternative pipeline routes. He advocated for restoring pre-war navigation conditions in the strait and cautioned against new arrangements that lack international consensus.

The Turkish foreign minister also acknowledged Pakistan’s leadership in the current mediation process, with Trkiye and other regional countries, including Qatar, supporting these efforts. He expressed hope that Iran and the US will reach a mutually beneficial agreement.

Fidan reflected on the prolonged discussions between Iran and the US over their nuclear issues, emphasizing the need for a permanent resolution to prevent further global and regional instability. He called for a comprehensive solution to the conflict, which he believes affects the entire world.

On regional matters, Fidan highlighted trilateral discussions between Trkiye, Syria, and Ukraine, noting improved regional stability and progress in Syria. However, he identified Israeli actions as a significant threat to Syria’s sovereignty and regional stability, urging Israel to cease being a source of conflict and displacement.
