China Reaffirms Stance Against US-Taiwan Military Relations Amid Upcoming Trump-Xi Discussions

Beijing: China on Wednesday declared its strong opposition to any form of military collaboration between the United States and Taiwan, emphasizing that the Taiwan issue remains an internal matter for Beijing. Zhang Han, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, reinforced this stance, insisting on the non-interference in China's internal affairs regarding Taiwan.

According to Anadolu Agency, Zhang firmly stated China's disapproval of military ties between the US and Taiwan, urging the US to respect the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqu©s. He called on the United States to handle Taiwan-related issues with caution, cease arms sales to Taiwan, and avoid sending signals that might embolden Taiwan independence movements.

These remarks follow reports of US officials expressing dissatisfaction with Taiwan's defense procurement budget amid ongoing tensions over military cooperation between Washington and Taipei. On Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun reiterated Beijing's consistent opposition to US arms sales to Taiwan, labeling China's stance on the matter as clear and unwavering.

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday his intention to discuss US arms sales to Taiwan with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his anticipated visit to Beijing. As reported by The New York Times, a bipartisan group of US senators has encouraged Trump to proceed with a delayed $14 billion weapons package for Taiwan, which has been stalled at the State Department for several months.
