Stockholm: Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced on Friday that he is actively engaging with EU foreign ministers to consider imposing sanctions on Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. This comes amid deliberations within the European Union on how to address Ben-Gvir's alleged mistreatment of aid flotilla activists.
According to Anadolu Agency, Tajani made these comments upon his arrival at the NATO ministerial meeting in Sweden. He emphasized the importance of respecting human rights, regardless of his personal views on the Global Sumud Flotilla, which he believes is not significantly aiding Gaza. Tajani expressed a strong condemnation of the actions and revealed that he is already in discussions with all European ministers to expedite a decision on sanctions against Ben-Gvir.
Germany is also closely monitoring the situation, though it has yet to decide on its course of action, Tajani noted. The urgency for a response has been heightened following Ben-Gvir's release of a video on social media, where he is seen taunting pro-Palestinian activists. These individuals were zip-tied and forced to kneel after being detained by Israeli forces in international waters.
The Global Sumud humanitarian aid flotilla reported on Tuesday that Israel had seized all 50 vessels in its convoy. These vessels, carrying 428 people from 44 countries, embarked from the Turkish district of Marmaris last Thursday. Their mission was to break the Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip, which has been in place since 2007.
