Brussels: The European Commission on Friday signaled further measures to tighten visa restrictions for Russian nationals following a joint letter from 11 EU member states calling for stricter and binding rules.

According to Anadolu Agency, Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert emphasized the ongoing priority of restricting visas for Russian citizens, a policy initiated in response to the Russian aggression against Ukraine in 2022. Lammert highlighted the EU's full suspension of its visa facilitation agreement with Russia and the guidance issued to member states to deprioritize visa applications from Russian nationals. He also pointed out that stricter visa rules were adopted by the bloc in 2025.

Lammert reiterated that the Commission is closely monitoring the implementation of these 2022 guidelines. Collaboration with member states is ongoing to ensure consistent application of these measures, with additional steps under consideration.

He announced plans to propose targeted restrictive visa measures aimed at addressing security risks associated with hostile actions by third countries as part of the upcoming revision of the visa code early next year. Furthermore, the Commission is exploring potential restrictions on access to the Schengen area for Russian nationals who participated in the war in Ukraine.
