Vienna: International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi announced that negotiations between the United States and Iran are reportedly nearing a framework agreement on Tehran's nuclear program. Grossi made this statement during a news conference following a meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors, emphasizing the agency's ongoing communication with both nations, despite not being a direct participant in the discussions.
According to Anadolu Agency, Grossi expressed optimism about the progress of the talks, indicating that both parties are close to establishing an organizational structure that could address various issues related to Iran's nuclear activities. He further emphasized the IAEA's efforts to restore verification activities in Iran, highlighting the importance of Tehran adhering to its obligations under existing agreements with the agency.
Grossi pointed out the challenges faced due to the prolonged ceasefire, which has affected the IAEA's inspection capabilities in Iran. He mentioned that while some activities have continued at facilities chosen by Iran, there remains an element of discretion regarding what the agency is permitted to inspect. He stressed the significance of Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium, suggesting possible options such as exporting, diluting, or maintaining it under IAEA monitoring.
In addition, Grossi underscored the necessity for the IAEA to conduct inspections in Iran to verify the uranium stockpile. He also issued a stern warning against targeting nuclear facilities during conflicts, referencing his recent visit to the Arab Gulf region and the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates, which was attacked by a drone.
Grossi reiterated the importance of respecting nuclear safety and security protocols, urging all parties to exercise maximum restraint in military activities involving nuclear sites. He emphasized that the IAEA maintains consistent safety standards globally and condemned any attacks on nuclear facilities, highlighting the potential environmental and safety risks of such actions.
Grossi concluded by advocating for dialogue and diplomacy as the only sustainable means to achieve peace, stability, and cooperation in the region and worldwide.
