Paris: US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated on Sunday that while a significant agreement with Iran seems imminent, the United States remains prepared to act if diplomatic efforts do not succeed. Hegseth was speaking to reporters as he left Paris, where he participated in the D-Day anniversary commemorations.

According to Anadolu Agency, Hegseth emphasized the commitment of US President Donald Trump to securing an agreement that would prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. He reiterated the US stance, saying, “We are prepared … to do what needs to be done to ensure that Iran never gets a nuclear weapon.”

In addition to nuclear concerns, Hegseth addressed issues regarding maritime security. He assured that shipping in the region continues to operate smoothly and warned that the US would address any Iranian threats to maritime traffic, should they arise.

Hegseth expressed optimism about the diplomatic process, stating, “Ultimately, we think a deal, a great deal. It’s likely coming soon.” This remark underscores the administration’s belief that a diplomatic resolution with Iran could be within reach.

Furthermore, Hegseth confirmed that a review of the US’s 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan is nearing completion, with preliminary findings expected to be released shortly. This review is part of ongoing efforts to evaluate and learn from the withdrawal process.
