Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced Trkiye’s readiness to contribute to mine-clearing efforts in the Strait of Hormuz if requested by involved parties, expressing optimism about progress in US-Iran negotiations. “If an agreement is reached between the parties, or if we are asked to contribute to the mine-clearing process, we would be pleased to do so,” Fidan stated during an interview with South Korean broadcaster JTBC during his visit to South Korea.
According to Anadolu Agency, Fidan emphasized Trkiye’s consistent principle in conflict resolution, citing its approach during the Russia-Ukraine war. He highlighted Trkiye’s willingness to assist when parties agree on a solution and seek its facilitation. Fidan remains optimistic about ending the conflict, noting that both the US and Iran desire de-escalation.
Fidan addressed the potential signing of a memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran, expressing cautious optimism. “I am optimistic because I am in regular consultations with both sides, with mediator Pakistan, and with some other relevant actors in the region,” he said. Despite unresolved technical details, Fidan indicated that both sides have broadly agreed on the draft framework, hoping for positive news soon.
Fidan underscored the urgency of the Strait of Hormuz issue over nuclear negotiations due to its global economic and humanitarian impact. He warned that prolonged closure could lead to food shortages in parts of Africa and broader global disruption. Both Washington and Tehran prioritize reopening the strait before broader negotiations.
The minister accused Israel of undermining negotiations, urging international pressure on Israel to support diplomacy. Fidan argued that Israel believes any US-Iran agreement would not serve its interests and is attempting to derail negotiations. He pointed to international opposition to Israeli policies as a potential diplomatic tool.
Fidan criticized Israel’s regional policies, stating they pose global risks beyond the Middle East. He highlighted the implications for energy security and migration, citing Israel’s expansionist and occupation policies. He called for Israel to halt civilian deaths, lift restrictions on Gaza, and end occupations.
Fidan expects US President Donald Trump to attend the NATO summit in Ankara on July 7-8, emphasizing the need for reforming the international order to address current realities. He warned that failure of cooperation would be a ‘great betrayal of humanity.’
Discussing Trkiye’s cooperation with South Korea on the Sinop Nuclear Power Plant, Fidan recalled earlier talks with Korea Electric Power Corporation and expressed hope for progress using South Korean technology. He highlighted the strong ties between Trkiye and South Korea since the Korean War, noting advancements in trade, defense, and technology cooperation under their strategic partnership.
