Jakarta: Four Indonesian soldiers were sentenced to prison on Wednesday for carrying out an acid attack on rights activist Andrie Yunus, according to local media reports.

According to Anadolu Agency, Edi Sudarko received a three-year prison sentence, Budi Hariyanto Widhi Cahyono 2.5 years, Nandala Dwi Prasetya two years, and Sami Lakka 1.5 years, as reported by Detik online news.

The court found the defendants guilty of involvement in the acid attack on Yunus, who is an activist with KontraS, a Jakarta-based rights group known as the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence. The court emphasized several aggravating factors in its decision, including the betrayal of military duties by the defendants, damage to the military’s reputation, the intentional nature of the attack, their “arrogance,” and the lasting trauma and suffering inflicted on Yunus, who experienced permanent eye damage.

Yunus was attacked on March 12 after participating in a discussion about military involvement in civilian affairs. He sustained severe burns to his face, chest, and arms as a result of the attack.

The defendants were charged with premeditated assault, which carries a maximum prison sentence of seven years.
