Moscow: Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani on Thursday highlighted Moscow's "very significant" role in efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East during talks with his Russian counterpart in Moscow.

According to Anadolu Agency, in opening remarks at a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Al Zayani said Bahrain attaches great importance to international efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East and ensuring respect for the sovereignty of states. "We know that Russia plays a vital role in achieving this goal," Al Zayani stated, referencing history to demonstrate Moscow's efforts in this regard. He noted the situation in the region has been "developing dangerously" in recent months.

Al Zayani also emphasized Bahrain's high regard for coordination with Russia on international platforms, expressing hope that continued bilateral consultations will contribute to regional and international security. He acknowledged Russia's emphasis on ensuring the safety of international shipping and affirmed belief in political and diplomatic solutions to the crisis.

In response, Lavrov thanked Al Zayani for his remarks and assessment of Russia's role in international affairs, including in the Middle East. He highlighted Moscow's efforts to bring Gulf countries together to develop a regional security concept, supported by external partners. Lavrov mentioned that the concept was recently updated and circulated to all capitals, including Manama, and noted that initial reactions have started coming in.

Lavrov expressed hope that the approach, which seeks to unite Arabs and Iranians through confidence-building measures and direct engagement, will foster stability in the region. He reiterated Moscow's commitment to the principle of freedom of navigation in the region and globally.
